Popular Lemon Meringue

‘One of our goals is to cater for those with food intolerances or special dietary needs in inspiring ways’

When two good friends tell me that they've just had the best Lemon Meringue Pie in Sydney I become like a bull to a red flag and promptly make a note in my diary as a must visit on the weekend — especially when it's also just been reviewed in the SMH Good Living. I checked their website and noticed they have a stall at Eveleigh Farmers' Market which I visited first but didn't see any on display so I assume they'd sold out. Upon arriving at the small shop labelled oneFIVEseven it was clear to see that word has passed around about this place and it's popularity was evident. The small and cute looking Lemon Meringue Pie ($4) had a lovely short pastry base with plenty of lemon curd and smooth meringue on top — I'm assuming everything in the shop is gluten free? The large version sitting in the display looked pretty impressive but I wasn't sure how easy it would have been to get home safely to share with the family. I actually prefer the balance of meringue versus lemon curd from Bacco Pasticceria which has the added delight of a crunchy outer meringue shell. The Mini Pizza ($2.50) was tasty and also reasonably priced for a quick bite on the run.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Seems reasonably priced, Dairy/Gluten/Wheat/Egg/Maize free products available
CONS: Careful of the dripping lemon curd if freshly cooked, Metered street parking — BOO! Gets crowded when busy, Not relaxing to sit inside when crowded
MUST TRY: Lemon Meringue, Want to try other products

I love the way they scoop their meringue on the larger pie, the entire display window looks delicious!

Dripping lemon curd? Never! Must have been a one-off that just wasn't ready. I'm eating their delicious cakes on a regular basis and have done so for 3.5 years (before it was completely gluten-free). Lemon meringue pie is my favourite with the chocolate & pear coming in at a close second : )

I agree with the comment above. i have never had one from HealthyFeast where the lemon curd has been dripping. I can assure you it's a one off. I've been going there for almost 3 years as well and that's never happened.
And as a coeliac I can tell you that everything there is gluten free - my paradise!

hi yaya, it's certainly a very distinct way of presentation. must be so much yummy meringue to get through.

hi bean sprout's cafe, one of those unexpected eating hazards when you don't eat fast enough hehe

hi anonymous, i'll have to try their chocolate and pear next. i wonder how it will compare to Central Baking Depot if it's a similar style http://simonfoodfavourites.blogspot.com/2009/06/central-baking-depot-sydney-26-june.html i think the dripping was a one off and the pie wasn't quite ready which shows how fresh it was. the owner assured me it's not supposed to be like that.

hi anonymous, i never knew this place existed but i wish i had known about it ages ago. it's great such cake shops can cater for those who have particular allergies. is there anything else they sell which you'd recommend I must try? :-)

Oh yum, somewhere to check out this weekend!

Metered parking is a good idea, it means you're much more likely to get a park. Look up "The High Cost of Free Parking" to see why we should have more metered parking.

hi Meringulicious, hope you find something you really like. one of my pet hates is metered parking so i much prefer free parking especially for those times when you're dining out and you're not sure how long you'll be so you don't have to worry about putting more money in the meter :-)

Went to pick up a large pie today, the bakery has closed! No forwarding address, just phone number & a thank you for your patronage. But I need pie!

hi anonymous, oh dear that doesn't sound good. someone must know where they've gone if they've moved. they used to sell at Eveleigh markets at carriageworks on saturdays so maybe they still have a stall there? hopefully we'll find them again.
