McDonald's: Double Cheeseburger for $2, Randwick (10 Jan 2012)

Shop 20, Royal Randwick Shopping Centre
73 Belmore Road, Randwick NSW 2031

Extra cheese to please

“We asked for 1,000 likes and you gave us over 9,000! What are we gonna do? Add an extra slice of cheese and bring back the $2 Double Cheeseburger! Available between 12pm – 1pm, from 28 December … http://www.facebook.com/McDonaldsAU/posts/295669047142702

A late night tv ad brainwashes me to want to try the Double Cheeseburger for only $2 between 12 til 1 pm the next day. Unfortunately I generally don't like eating hamburgers without a side of fries as well bringing my total guilt factor to 68% of my daily fat intake combined with 71% of my daily sodium intake. My Double Cheeseburger ($2) arrives with a messy ketchup mishap but I guess that's to be expected if the order has been rushed. The bun wasn't as soft as expected so I'm thinking it might not have been as fresh as I've had before. McDonald's Fries ($2.90, large) are generally a pleaser and thankfully these were pretty good. The McDonald's in Randwick has food court seating available and is kept fairly clean and the staff seemed pretty on the ball in terms of fast service. My favourite McDonald's burger is probably the Big Mac with its addictive special sauce although I'm also a fan of the elusive McFeast which seems to have John Farnham come backs from time to time but I still think a slice of beetroot would make it even better.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Cheap, Predictable, Available everywhere
CONS: Not particularly healthy, It'll never look like the menu image
MUST TRY: Getting McDonald's to put Battered Fish & Chips on the menu for beach side stores like Coogee Beach

Double Cheeseburger ($2, available between 12-1 pm promo)

Some misplaced messy ketchup

This is how the Double Cheeseburger is advertised. Apart from probably being impossible to actually look like this, have you noticed the extra pickle in the burger?

The notorious pickle — although I do like them

Double cheese and meat patties

Double Cheeseburger + Large Fries = 68% of my daily fat and 71% of my sodium = healthy salad tomorrow

I didn't realise there was a Triple Cheeseburger

Large Fries ($2.90) — Did you know it contains no sugar?

I can't believe you're a respected food blogger and you've blogged about McDonalds. Even walking through the doors of the golden arches loses you cudos surely. That's not food!

I love that you just reviewed a $2 cheeseburger from McDonald's.

It's been a long time since I ate Macca's. As good as your photos are I'm not tempted back.

Interesting that you didn't mention much of the eating besides the bun -- I guess we all know what it tastes like anyway so there's no need. Or just no words to describe it? :)

hi MH, sadly i grew up on McDonald's when i was a kid and worked there for many years as my first job so I actually don't mind the odd McDonald's run — especially on road trips. It's obviously not for everyone and I definitely eat far less of it these days except maybe as a late night craving after drinking out late at night. do you have any recommendations for the best burger in Sydney?

hi detective chow, i love how when i Google search Double Cheeseburger my review comes up on the first page hehe In terms of the taste i'm sure it'll never beat a Rockpool Bar & Grill burger. i tend to only eat McDonald's due to convenience these days and you can always reply on the toilets and free WIFI when you're travelling — although sometimes the WIFI is a bit slow depending on which restaurant.

This made me smile. I love your varied posts Simon! :-)

I don't think there's anything wrong with a food blogger getting Macca's (we may have done a drive by tonight...). Sure it's not healthy or gourmet, but it hits the spot sometimes ;-)

hi chanel, hope your drive by was good. i don't think there's any rules about a food blogger blogging about McDonald's :-)

It's not just about the individual item though is it. It's about the McDonalds brand in general and the influence on fast food culture, increasing lack of provenance of food as a populous and childhood obesity. I'm not a extreme lefty either - I actually work in the dark arts of PR - I just care passionately about fitness and health.

You review isn't exactly damming and your promoting a promotion of theirs at the end of the day.

Just surprised me next to the normal insightful and quality pieces that I enjoy.

Best burger in the year that I've been in Sydney would have to be at Four In Hand I reckon. But I love that place so might be biased!

hi MH, the dark arts of PR hehe. that's great you're passionate about fitness and health. there should be more people like you in the world. too often i see so many people smoking a cigarette with their coffee or coca-cola in the morning for their morning tea or perhaps even breakfast. at the end of the day it is promoting their $2 deal although i'm sure the ones who love McDonald's will already know about it and for those who don't eat McDonald's it won't make them go out and get one. For me it's just a food account on what i've tried. Thanks for the burger recommendation. I'll have to try it one day although I'm sure like any burger it probably won't be the healthiest option on the menu, but it can be satisfying nevertheless :-)

I think it is funny you reviewed the burger. I think it is funny you ATE the burger! My last Maccas cheeseburger was consumed on 28 October 2009 at Frankfurt airport, part of the happy meal:)

All the way home, I could smell the cheeseburger. Everything smelt like a cheeseburger (each plane, each airport, the pillow in the plane, each food item I consumed) and I think I was even sweating cheeseburger! *shudder*

hi miss kimbers, i think it's called the McDonalds Effect. If you eat their food it actually seems to make your pores smell like McDonalds. I'm not sure what it is but I'm thinking it can't be a good thing.
