Tank Stream Way, Sydney NSW 2000

Serving Soul since 2012

Ranking in at #4 spot on the Time Out Sydney best coffee in Sydney CBD list this small but happening cafe with friendly service and intimate vibe is where they still respect old school vinyl and cassettes. My Cappuccino ($3.50) uses a house blend created with the help of The Little Marionette called 'Jungle Boogie' with interesting flavour at first sip that's enjoyable and seems to mellow out to a lightish finish towards the end of the cup. Muffin life is strong with a housemade Apple & Fig Muffin ($4) that's smallish in size but its light texture with a pleasant crust makes for a perfect match with a good coffee.

Char Kway Teow Cravings

Inspired by an instagram post by Grab Your Fork brings me to try the Char Tway Teow ($14) described as spicy wok-tossed rice noodles with eggs, prawns, cockles, Chinese sausage and fresh bean sprouts. One of the few places in Sydney that actually include cockles and these ones were pretty plump and added a salty burst of flavour. There was a nice noticeable wok her achieved. Thinner pad thai style noodles were used but I generally prefer the broader flat rice noodles. Three decent sized deveined prawns in the mix and come tasty sausage. There's a fair amount of seating and a bit of theatre to be seen from the open kitchen. I was originally sat next to the cutlery counter but be sure to move if this happens — the noise of the banging cutlery is very unsettling and stressful when right next to you. I've tried their Hainanese Chicken Rice on a previous visit and thought it was pretty good too. I think the Wan Tan Mee is calling my name for the next visit.

Good coffee in little spaces

I've been to the Little Me in Maroubra and keep passing this one on the bus so thought I'd give it a try. Cappuccino ($3.50) using house blend had a good strength of flavour and the staff were friendly and efficient. Seating is very limited and you only get a small window space to rest your coffee so it's more a takeaway spot rather than a dine in. There's a few simple and reasonably priced eats on the menu to tempt including some mini cupcakes for a mini sugar hit. Parking spots in the area can be a challenge.
