Simple eats done well

This would have to be my new favourite cafe in Marrickville based on my first impressions. Nice fit out, great coffee, very reasonably priced menu with nothing over $12, welcoming friendly service and even the toilet out the back is well presented. Definitely a local gem I wish was closer to home. Love the flavour in my Cappuccino ($3.50) using a house blend with lots of stretchy froth for the win. Avocado on Toast ($8) using Penny Fours sourdough has a good amount of avo, nice flavour and a great sourdough. A little wedge of lemon to squeeze and some extra spiced dukkah could perhaps be a nice addition as well like they did at Parma. The home loan is back on the cards. Homemade cakes are looking good especially the Victoria Sponge with Strawberry Compote & Fresh Cream for a reasonable $6.50. Looking forward to revisiting with the family for their Granola with seasonal poached fruit ($8.50) and Free range ham with Swiss cheese toastie $6.50).

Marrickville's new retro diner

Where else in Sydney can you get a Chocolate Hemp Brownie aka Space Cake — legally? Charles Cameron, formerly of Brewtown Newtown has done a fine job with creating this contemporary looking version of a retro diner in Marrickville. Love the fitout, high ceiling and plenty of natural light matched with some down-to-earth friendly service. Arriving just after 3 meant the kitchen had already closed so I'll definitely have to return to try the menu.

From the display of housemade goodies the generous slice of Dark Chocolate Cherry Vegan Cake ($7) was very yummy and managed to satisfy both my brother and I for an afternoon tea fix. If I wasn't told it was vegan I would have never of guessed it. Cappuccino ($4) was nice using a custom house blend by Collective Roasting Solutions which was supposed to reference the flavours of a Neapolitan ice-cream. This probably would have come down to suggestive thinking for my untuned palate. The Chai Masala will definitely be on my wishlist for next time as I'm always on the lookout for a good one in Sydney and that French Toast with chocolate hazelnut brioche and orange buttermilk ricotta is calling my name to enjoy its calories.

Pho lunching in Marrickville

First time visit to this very popular Vietnamese restaurant. I wish I could have sat down to have my pho but it was a takeaway lunch for the Mrs this time around who was in need of a pho fix. Chicken Pho ($14) and Rare Beef Pho ($14) both had well flavoured broths and were a pretty generous portion for the regular size. The slices of rare beef were very good. Keep in mind if getting takeaway you have to be careful of the broth possibly spilling a little bit and if you're getting the rare beef the blood will colour your noodles — and be sure to reheat the broth so it cooks the beef. Good to see they provide a little container of hoison and chilli sauce and a slice of lemon with the takeaway. Hope to revisit to try their spring rolls.
