Original designer of the Kreativ Blogger Award (6 August 2009)

So who started all this?

I've been noticing quite a few blogs I follow have be receiving and hence forwarding their nominations for this Kreativ Blogger Award logo (below) and it got me thinking where did it all start and who actually designed it. I personally received one from Bean Sprout's Cafe which I sincerely appreciate the nomination — thanks for thinking of me. Well if you've been wondering the same thing then check out the original designer Hulda from Norway. It was made from some scrap sheets in May 2008 which is quite surprising to me because I always thought it was computer generated for some reason. I can't read Norwegian but this Free Online Norwegian to English Translator helps a little bit in trying to translate her blog. When searching for details I first came across the Clay Garden blog in Google who also pondered the origin and this got me onto Hulda.

Now another reason why I wanted to know where it came from is that the format of the 'rules' associated with the Kreativ Blogger logo which everyone forwards on is very much like a chain letter and personally I dislike forwarding chain letters — I'm a huge skeptic so welcome to my world. Here's the 'rules' for your reference:

The Kreativ Blogger award comes with the following rules:
1. You must thank the person who has given you the award.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link the person who has nominated you for the award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
5. Nominate 7 other Kreativ Bloggers.
6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on which of the blogs to let them know they have been nominated.

I also checked Google for "You must thank the person who has given you the award" and it came up 712 times so it's getting around. I found this response from From Donuts to Delirium: My Life as a House Wife which uses funny photos to support things about herself which I think is quite clever and funny. When you search for "Kreativ Blogger Award" most of the images found seem to now actually be the pink wallpaper logo version (below) but I don't think Hulda actually designed this(?).

Pink Wallpaper design variation by unknown(?)

So now I'm thinking whoever designed the Kreativ Blogger Award pink wallpaper version has taken Hulda's concept, added the words 'award' to make it sound more official and turned it into a chain letter and hence is getting bloggers to add this logo to their blog for an award which actually isn't a real award (correct me if I'm wrong) but more an acknowledgement that someone likes what your doing with your blog and is reading it. Now don't get me wrong, I still think it's a valid idea which is helping the blogging community to connect on another level in expressing themselves and showing support and acknowledgement from fellow bloggers but technically I believe it's a 'chain letter' and instead of forwarding it as an email to 7 people we seem to be blogging it now to 7 people.

Personally I'd like to take this concept and change it from a chain letter back to something which is actually more creative and perhaps more in the spirit of what the original designer created it for in the first place which is to actually show 'creativity'. So hence I think we should create our own 'Kreativ Blogger' logo which instead of telling people about ourselves we visually show something about what we do and hence perhaps reveals something about our passion and oneself.

My alternative simple rules are:
1. Create your own signature dish.
2. Kudos points if you make it from scratch.
3. Extra kudos points if you grew the ingredients.
4. Photograph it.
5. Add credit and text in font of your choosing.
6. Blog it.
7. Leave your 'creativity' for future comment.

The above rules would generally be for food bloggers but could easily be adapted for other blogs on perhaps jewellery, arts & crafts and fashion etc. It's time to think creatively! It reminds me of when I saw A Table For Two's blog of Adriano Zumbo cakes and how creatively they were presented, now that's definitely worthy of a Kreativ Blogger Award.

Here's my own Kreativ Blogger logo:

Tropical Island Dessert: Fresh strawberry, raspberry, mango and lychee macerated with Grand Marnier and Frangelico served on a bed of port wine jelly and topped with vanilla ice cream, Christmas lunch 2007, Chef Leong :-)

Wow, great work finding out the origins! I think it is great to read the 7 interesting facts of the person who has given it to you and the 7 interesting facts of the people you gave it to more than anything else. Also the fact that you have received an award is touching!

Hi Simon, I stumbled across your blog as I was very wary of this - I have the same reservations about the 'chain letterishness' of having to pass it on to 7 people etc etc. Great alternative idea, and well done on locating the origin. I'm going to link to your blog post about it as part of my explanation too!
