A favourite spot for falafel fix

Yummba has been a long time favourite place for a falafel fix since I tried it many years ago. Today is no exception but I also found out its sadly their last day at Westfield Bondi Junction after 13 years. It seems it's either renovate the shop front at a huge expense or move on time for these guys. Thankfully I hear they also have a Yummba at UNSW which I'll definitely have to check out. Today's lunch was the Yummba Plate ($23 large) to share. Falafel Balls with hummus, babaganoush, salsa, tahini, garden salad, tabouli, red cabbage and pickles. Love the size of these falafel which are cooked to order plus a great crunch and good flavour. Goes well with the dips and salad inside the soft pita bread or simply on their own. One of my top three places in Sydney for a falafel fix. I also love the falafels at Sabbaba in Bondi and Jasmin One in Punchbowl.

Build your own Middle Eastern

“BEKYA Middle Eastern kitchen uses family recipes that reflects the endless hours of preparation that comes from the heart. Using only local fresh ingredients to make flavoursome food, Our food techniques include pickling, slow cooking meats, home-made Egyptian flat breads and a variety of spice mixes.”

I was curious to see what Bekya was serving up. At first I thought it might have been something Greek but soon learnt it was middle eastern cuisine. Interesting to see a middle eastern menu being served by an all Asian crew. Makes me question the validity of the 'family recipes' used in their bio a bit but happy to be educated on who the owners are and they're experience with middle eastern food. The menu options are fairly simple, wraps or boxes. I chose the 'box' option i.e. protein, salad, rice and dip. Egyptian Falafel, Arnabeet and haloumi ($12.90) with fattoush salad, rice with lentils and babaghanouj. Two falafel that I believe were cooked to order although I don't think were made to order so I found it a little denser than preferred but still had a good crunch on the outside. Flavour was OK but have had better falafel in Sydney. Haloumi was quite nice and soft. Arnabeet I learnt is the cauliflower which was nicely flavoured and roasted. Fattoush salad was missing the signature bread component that distinguishes a fattoush salad from basically a garden salad. The babaghanouj pretty good with a smoky flavour. The rice with lentils OK but found it a bit dense and dry. Service was friendly and fairly efficient. Wasn't keen on the cutlery which is that light wooden stuff that feels funny in your mouth — much prefer the smoother biodegradable plastic cutlery.

Fix St James: Wine Bar & Restaurant, CBD Sydney (1 Sept 2011)

Good food and wine fix

I've passed this restaurant 1000s of times over the years and never thought to go in but when Tony Hollingsworth mentioned to me at the Vivo Cafe Bloggers Event that he's a big fan of the steaks at Fix St James it was time to put on my wish list. Mustering a group of four including Richard Elliot we were set to join the 'business lunch' crowd. The Complimentary bread was very tasty and the name alone of the Piadina 'Pete's Famous Falafel' ($8) was enough to make me want to try it. Good flavours came through and made for a nice starter to share. The Scallop with cauliflower sformato & bacon dressing ($5.50) had good flavours and I wondered if a bit of bacon crumble on top would have worked in its favour too.

The LLB lunch special of $24 was tempting as advertised on their pedestrian blackboard sign but what possibly might be their signature dish of Coorong Angus Skirt Steak Tagliata ($33) instead got my attention. The kitchen seems to love playing games when serving this dish. Covered with an abundance of fresh rocket when served it looks more like a salad for vegetarians. It's one way the chef gets you to eat your greens and thankfully it was a much nicer rocket than your average variety that's was enjoyable to eat with the grated cheese. The steak underneath is cooked medium rare and tender as hoped. Duck fat potatoes are included which perhaps could have been a bit crunchier for my liking but were still nice and filling. A glass of Thierry Puzelat ‘le P’tit Tannique’ Gamay 2010 ($12) was a nice match. The Esk Valley Suckling Rack ($34) came with perfect crackling as hoped and the dish had good flavour. For the green lovers the Shooting broccoli with anchovy ($11) was well-flavoured although perhaps a bit on the oily side for those watching their figure. These guys certainly know how to cook dishes that excite the palate with wines that I'm sure will satisfy. It's definitley not the cheapest spot in town for an everyday lunch unless you're a lawyer with an expense account fit for entertaining.

Rowda Ya Habibi: Lebanese Banquet, Newtown (9 Sept 2010)

101 King Street, Newtown NSW 2042

Cheap lebanese banquet

When a family run business has been going for 33 years they must be doing something right. The service counter looks very much like a take away shop but there's lots of seating out the back for large groups as well as upstairs where you can sit on a cushion in your own private room — although I find it quite uncomfortable to sit for any length of time. The reasonably priced Deluxe Mazza Banquet ($25 per person) comes with your typical banquet dishes you'd expect which won't leave you hungry. The Baba Ganooj and Hommos are decent but perhaps not the best I've had. The Tabouleh is maybe a little of the dry side tonight but still fine when mixed with the dips. You'll also receive the more substantial dishes of Ladies Fingers, Shis Kebab and Garlic chicken. I judge a Lebanese restaurant by their Falafel and these had a nice outer crunch but they're not as flavoursome as say Jasmins or even Lebanon & Beyond for that matter. If you've got a sweet tooth then containers of Turkish delight ($5) are available from the downstairs counter to take home. I've heard if you find the elusive yellow turkish delight their really good — unfortunately none were available. The no-nonsense service was a little hard to get used but the dishes were efficiently prepared and served quickly.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:

CONS: No-nonsense service, Uncomfortable seating upstairs when sitting on a cushion with no back support and leg room, Toilet only had cake of soap
