Maccas returns to Randwick

After what seems like years McDonald's has returned to Royal Randwick Shopping Centre in a new location. Taking advantage of the corner spot it's well located near the bus stop and high pedestrian traffic. Seating is more suited for single and couple dining rather than families and ordering is via the displays rather than my preference of over the counter. Sausage Egg McMuffin ($4.45) and my guilty pleasure Hash Brown ($2.25) are good and served promptly via the table service available.

New shorty kids on the block

Taking over from where BiancoNero Espresso used to be in The Spot it's a fun name for a place with a bit of tongue in check reference to the owner who's not so short like Little John. Cappuccino ($3.50) is made well using Single O Paradox. Babyccino ($1.50) comes in a paper cup with a side of marshmallow and is about half froth so a pretty good result. The Breakfast Toastie with ham, cheese, tomato chutney, hollandaise on sourdough ($10) is a great choice as a hunger buster. Very tasty and a generous size using The Bread & Butter Project sourdough. I'd definitely get again or share again with the Mrs. Hash Brown on the side ($3) helps complete the carbs and always a winner when deep fried to a golden brown crunch. Free parking in the area is always a challenge but locals have a great new spot for their coffee and breakfast fix. Decent amount of seating and there's also a back deck out the back. On the wishlist for next visit will be the Prana Masala Chai, Bacon & Egg Milk Bun and their Reuben Sandwich.

The Great Maccas Craving

Every year around my birthday I get a blood test to check my cholesterol and general health. After my test this year I had been fasting for over 12 hours so I was pretty hungry and against my better judgement I was drawn to try The Great Aussie Brekkie ($7.45 with hash brown and drink). Of course I blame the promotional tv ad I saw the night before combined with lower than normal levels of sugar, salt and fat in my body. Admittedly I also find it hard to resist their evil crispy hash brown especially if it's cooked to a crunchy perfection. The Aussie BBQ Brekkie Roll comes in a super soft wheatgerm bun making it easy to eat. The two sausages have a bit of spice giving it taste and the bacon was just slightly tougher this time than I've had in their Bacon & Egg McMuffin. There was a fair amount of sauce which made it a bit messy to eat. You never get those perfect looking burgers you see in the menu boards anyway. For a Maccas option the flavours worked quite well together. It was like have an oversized cheeseburger with bacon and BBQ sauce and spicier patties. Not sure if I'd have it again as I only seem to have McDonald's when some new promotion comes out but if I was on a road trip I'd probably consider it as a meal on the run.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:

PROS: Quick and easy and available everywhere, Maccas breakfast fans will probably enjoy it

CONS: Not the healthiest breakfast option, No nutrient information on the packaging for the Aussie BBQ Brekkie Roll

MUST TRY: Hash brown before 10.30 am if you're a Maccas fan

VERDICT: A new breakfast option that's more filling than their other options which will probably be quite popular for those who like the Sausage McMuffin but larger and saucier

A weekend away in the Blue Mountains for Mother's Day, Mount Victoria (11-13 May 2012)

Fresh air, views and sunsets

A weekend getaway with friends brought me to Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains for some R&R. The views from the holiday house we stayed at were amazing which overlooked a valley and towards the mountains. Champagne, cheese and a fireplace made for a homely first night plus some Lindt chocolate blocks I hadn't tried before which went down a treat. In the morning I learnt how you could cook eggs in a small bowl and microwave for about 30 seconds to achieve a fat-free sunny side up. Went well with some bacon on a bun for some bushwalking energy during the day. Sunset Rock Lookout in Mount Victoria is a nice spot to be during sunset — check it out if you're ever in the area. The next day was Mother's Day with pancakes on the breakfast menu and my attempt at making some potato hash browns which turned out OK. I used flour and egg to coat some shredded potato I prepared the night before but I'm hoping to work out a way to cook without using egg so the potato flavour will be better. I want to be able to cook them like Baffi & Mo.
