Kate Waterhouse's Lipton Ice Green Tea Party, Ivy Sun Room, CBD Sydney (29 May 2012)

Green with refreshing envy

“Lipton Ice Green Tea is naturally low in calories, with no preservatives, artificial flavours or sweeteners. Made with real green tea leaves the Lipton Ice Green Tea range includes flavours such as Original, Citrus and Mango.”

Thanks to Rachel Winter and Caroline Bligh from Pulsecom for inviting me to the intimate Lipton Ice Green Tea Party hosted by Kate Waterhouse. Not only was Miss Kate easy-on-the-eye and incredibly slim to perhaps the envy of every women in the room but the three promoted Ice Tea drinks were refreshingly light on the palate without tasting too sweet. These days I personally avoid buying soft drinks and similar beverages which might be high in sugar and boringly opt for plain old tap water or fresh juicers as my preferred thirst quencher, but each to their own. My mind wandered to the potential of making an alcoholic cocktail with these drinks. Perhaps a Long Island Iced Tea using the Original Iced Tea instead of Coca-Cola, Citrus Vodka with the Citrus Iced Tea and Mango Liqueur with the Mango Iced Tea might work a treat? I was assured the unnatural sounding 'Tea Flavonoids' listed on the nutrition label was actually natural and Lipton Ice Tea had no preservatives, artificial colours or sweeteners — thankfully it tasted pretty good too. Impressive canapés were served to match the three kinds of Ice Tea. The Herb crusted salmon ballontine with horseradish and watercress and Alaskan king crab, black pepper and lime pillow sandwiches were my favourites of the day. All the canapés were cleverly designed to be bite sized except for the tasty Crisped zucchini flower in a soft flour tortilla with avocado salsa verde which had the potential to be a dress stainer from the juices if you weren't too careful.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Nice venue and interesting canapés served, Lipton Ice Tea has a refreshing taste that's not overly sweet on the palate
CONS: Still contains sugar of around 4.5%, I was the only guest who was a guy (although I didn't mind)
MUST TRY: Finding a cocktail recipe that works with Lipton Ice Tea

For simply the love of meat

Thanks to Richard Elliott for organising a casual lunch catchup to check out Mad Cow’s March into Merivale $33 menu which includes a wine or beer. This was our first time visiting the restaurant so we were looking forward to checking it out. The décor is nice and the roomy padded booths provide an intimate space to converse with your fellow diners. Complimentary bread is fresh and tasty and I order the 2008 Domaine Chandon Shiraz while Richard orders the 2006 Chandon Vintage Blanc de Blancs, both of which were good — alternatively a beer or the 2010 Domaine Chandon Sauvignon Blanc is available. My Black angus minute of fillet steak is usually $39 on the a la carte menu, topped with café de paris butter, and I believe usually includes fries and a green salad. Two small cuts equaling 200g is served on a plate with a side of lemon, you can’t get much simpler than that for presentation. Thankfully the steak is tender and cooked medium rare as ordered and its quality is evident with no sinewy bits found. You’d probably want to order some sides to share with this dish unless you’re a full-bred carnivore and someone that doesn’t make friends with salad.

The Beef city black angus scotch fillet is also 200g and comes with a small dish of spicy barbeque sauce which isn’t spicy at all but fairly mild and slightly sweet. A few drops of Tabasco would do the trick to give it a heat kick I was expecting. The steak is equally good and flavoursome but again sides would help fill out the dish. With compliments from the chef we received the other two dishes to photograph and sample before our steaks. The Moroccan vegetable bisteeya was nicely presented with the pastry filling bordering more on the side of sweet due to maybe sultanas in the mix and I was quite impressed with the substantial size of the Fillet of ocean trout. The lemon in the crushed potatoes really worked well and even though some of the thicker parts of the ocean trout was bordering on a little bit rare for me it was a nicely balanced dish. We also received a side of complimentary Shoestring fries ($8) which resembled the McDonalds cut variety and a very fresh Salad of field greens ($9) with a light dressing.

There was little time to stay around with deadlines looming back at the office but some complimentary petit fours provided a nice sugar hit for the afternoon which would have gone down well with a coffee. I really liked the outdoor adjoining courtyard, lounge and bar areas which look like a great spot to chill out with a drink or snack on the bar menu. In the end the steaks in themselves were good but I think the ocean trout dish won which you could happily have without needing to order any side dishes.

The Chefs of Merivale Gala Dinner (31 March 2009)

ivy Level 1, 320 George Street, Sydney 2000
http://www.marchintomerivale.com

Firstly and foremost thank you to Melissa from Merivale who invited me to the closing event of March Into Merivale which was a charity dinner to help raise funds for Camp Quality. At $300pp with matched wines I felt very privileged to be part of the event and to have behind-the-scenes access to the kitchen and the opportunity to taste the six-course dinner put together by eleven head chefs. I arrived about 8.45 pm so missed out on the starting cocktails, champagne and canapes but arrived in time for the main dishes.

The professional and friendly service I received at arrival continued throughout the night and a special thanks to our table waiter Anthony from Lotus who was exceptionally helpful and vigilant in making sure a platted dish was available to photograph in the kitchen under decent lighting conditions.

I thought all the matching wines were very good and my favourite dish of the night was the steamed baby snapper fillet by Chef Peter Doyle. The very generous portion of chocolate marquis for dessert was also very satisfying. It was great to see the kitchen in full action and I was very impressed how smoothly and calmly it all seemed to function without staff crashing into each other under the enormous pressure of quickly serving so many guests.
