Was lovely to meet Penny Lawson, a self-diagnosed curd nerd with 20 years experience in the food industry sourcing local and international cheeses. You can smell the cheese as you walk into this small but very tempting cheese shop stocked with plenty of variety to please. Move over 3 and 5 cheese toasties. Penny's Cheese Shop prefers to do an 8 Cheese Toastie ($12) this week using sourdough from Pioik Bakery and Cheddar-VIC, Raclette-VIC, Gruyere-NSW, Mimolette-France, Reypenaer VSOP-The Netherlands, Tilsit-NSW biodynamic, Caciocavallo-Italy and Raclette-France. I've chosen the Quattro Stelle ham option but they also do a fresh chilli option for those who like it spicy — I might have to try next time. So much cheesy goodness that a pickle on the side would be awesome to help refresh the palate. Most good cheese toasties will have buttered bread on the outside to form a crust but this one differs with replacing the butter with more cheese instead that's melted to form a cheesy crust. The cheese shop has been open about 2 months and Penny is slowly transforming the space that used to be the Leo cafe. I spy eggs, olive oil, crackers and honey from various artisan producers on offer. Parking can be a challenge in the area but it's worth the trip.

Leo: Cafe, Potts Point (24 Oct 2017)

The roar of a morning coffee

Barista Robbie G seems to know a thing or two about making a decent coffee. Cappuccino ($3.50) using Grinders Coffee is well made with plenty of froth and nice flavour. The health conscious menu seems well priced and the fit out is small with limited seating but nice. Only 4 weeks old when I visited and now under a year it looks like the site has been taken over by Penny's Cheese Shop.

Zinc Cafe, Potts Point (17 June 2018)

Grand Cru coffee in Potts Point

Check out this very popular corner cafe for a quick coffee fix. I liked my Cappuccino ($4.20) using Grand Cru Coffee with a bold hit of flavour and plenty of well formed froth. The Piccolo ($3.80) wasn't as well liked by the Mrs and we both agreed the coffee seemed to work much better with the heavier volume of milk. Service was efficient and on the ball juggling orders and seating swiftly. Spotted a few tempting cakes on the main common dining table that I'm suspecting were baked in the morning. Nice space and plenty of seating both inside and out. I like how you the coffee machine is on show so you can check out the barista in action. Keen to try their Smokin Mary or Breakfast Negroni next time.
