The Lookout: Cafe, Elizabeth Bay (22 Aug 2018)

Coffee with a great water view

This cafe takes full advantage of the marina view and the menu remains surprisingly reasonable. Cappuccino ($3.50) uses Mecca Coffee and is well made with a good hit of flavour in a small size cup. There's a fair amount of seating although I'm sure it'll be well sort after on the weekends. Free street parking exists for the lucky ones and there's a nearby playground in the park for the kids. It's also a dog friendly area.

Coffee Alchemy with a view

Nice spot to enjoy a coffee with limited seating that takes advantage of the marina water views. Cappuccino ($5 double shot) using Coffee Alchemy 'Hairy Chest' blend doesn't hold back on flavour that's for sure. I probably should have just gone the single shot but the owner recommended the double. Checking out the coffee description I think the single shot would have been fine, “Bold and bellowing, this blend blows all the bass notes loud and clear. Heavy on the palate and pungent with dark chocolate, earth and treacle on the nose, this is our answer to those who request, “Give me something that’ll grow hair on my chest.” This blend is best for milk-based espresso, and is disproportionately preferred by ladies”. Only takeaway cups available for coffee. Parking is limited in the area and it's surrounded by pleasant grass gardens and a playground for kids nearby. The kids enjoyed their Pure Pops at $5 a pop.

Coffee, Toasties & Pickling

“I have been in the Hospitality game for over 14 years and have finally decided to branch out and focus on my passion. Pickling. It might seem weird to some, but i've set up a great local cafe with superb service and great local coffee and produce to share a little bit of my passion with you. You can look forward to some pickles made with love with some of your dishes.”

The guys at Pickled seem to have done a fine job on their first day of opening despite the chef calling in sick. I liked my Cappuccino ($3.50) using DC Speciality Coffee Roasters from Melbourne and the Mrs approves of her Latte ($3.50). Hot Chocolate ($3.50) for Miss 4 year old hits the spot with a good hit of chocolate. Babyccino for Miss 1 year old is free but served in a breakable glass and filled with mostly milk that's still steaming a bit of heat which is a recipe for a messy disaster. Some napkins with the beverages would have been appreciated from our lovely friendly service who wasn't quite sure what a Babyccino was but is fully educated now.

We really enjoyed the 3 Cheese Toastie with Gruyere, cheddar and pecorino ($10) served on Brickfields rye sourdough with a lovely fennel flavour and the Vege Toastie with pickled radish and beetroot, Gruyere, rocket and aioli ($10) was equally yummy. The fit out is nice and there's some outdoor seating which probably will come in handy for those with dogs. Lots of big jars of pickling spotted although nothing for sale at this stage but hopefully in the future. I'm hoping they'll also include some large green olives in the range. My next toastie on the wishlist will be their Reuben with Pastrami, gruyere, house made sauerkraut and Russian dressing for $10.
