Jimmy's Recipe Malaysia: Seafood Kway Teow Siram, Sydney (13 Jan 2010)

The Galeries Victoria, Ground Floor
Shop RC16, 500 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000

Generous but lukewarm

Even though the Seafood Kway Teow Siram is quite generous in size I was worried when my order came out in about 5 minutes. There wasn't really a char on the wide flat rice noodles and the whole dish was a bit lukewarm. Plenty of ingredients though but it just seemed to miss a cook charring factor which would have given it more taste and heat.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Cheap, Clean, Fast, Decent amount of seating
CONS: Too fast — Seafood Kway Teow lukewarm
MUST TRY: Seafood Laksa

Silky Seafood Extender

It looks like Jimmy's has undergone a decor and menu renovation since I visited last time and there's doesn't seem to that tacky sign outside saying 'Best Laksa in Sydney'. For some strange reason I really enjoy their smooth tasting seafood extender (surimi) in their seafood laksa which unravels like wide fettuccine. It soaks up the laksa broth which has good depth of flavour. Menu prices are good value and after Malay-Chinese they would be my next favourite place in the city to get a laksa.

Best Laksa in Sydney?

Advertising yourself as the best laksa in Sydney is a major call but we all know we have our favourites. My favourite has been the Malay-Chinese Takeaway on Hunter Street for many years although Jimmy's is probably up there amongst my top 5 in the city. The place is always popular and it's a lot easier finding a seat at The Galeries Victoria than their tiny Bridge Lane premises off Bridge Street or Malay-Chinese for that matter. They seem to have the quickest service I've come across — literally I sometimes get my bowl of laksa in less than a minute after ordering and paying for it. I'm quite keen on their seafood laksa which comes with mussels and seafood extender which falls apart beautifully. Well used looking bowls, hopefully clean, are a bit of a worry but the laksa broth certainly hits the spot on a cold winter day.

Don't look too close at the bowls – I guess it adds to the flavour!
