Bringing alive the laneways
Oops, for some reason I thought the Malaysia Kitchen Food Market was going to be open for lunch today but soon realised I'd incorrectly read the details and it actually opens to the public tonight at 6 pm. The dishes look tempting but it will be interesting to see how the event will meet expectations of providing authentic Malaysian cuisine. I'm always a bit skeptical when it comes to food stalls with their make shift kitchens and let's hope the weather stays dry. Mamak is a good choice but I've never thought of Chinta Ria as a place to go for Malaysian, perhaps I should check them out. Jimmy's Recipe has some OK dishes but I prefer Malay-Chinese for their laksas. I've always thought of Jackie M as a weekend stall but have since learnt they have a restaurant I must visit. I've never heard of Sambal and it seems there name has been erased from the welcome boards today after last nights VIP opening so I wonder if they're still going to be there.
Opening hours:
16 Feb 2011: Wed 6 – 9 pm
17-18 Feb: Thu & Fri 12 noon – 3 pm & 6 – 9 pm

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Different Malaysian dishes to try, Nice decor with lanterns, Interesting location
CONS: Weather permitting, Have to pay $10 to get in for a meal so you can't just have a browse, I'm assuming it will get crowded and seating might become limited
MUST TRY: Visiting when I get a chance

Damn, I thought it was open for lunch today
George Street entrance — Sambal taken off the welcome board and being replaced with Jimmy's Recipe I think
George Street entrance — the pay up before you enter counter
Sneaky glance down the lane way of the seating — communal seating seems to be the go

Thank you for your feedback Simon, will try and check in out tomorrow night if the weather's OK!
This looks like it will be good.
And don't you hate it when you have the wrong time or date for something, only to find out it's not til later or it's already passed ;)
Damn that you misread the details! They are open for lunch today and tomorrow though. Hopefully the rain will be absent so everyone can get a taste. From what I've read this concept has just come from NY where it was a success so I'm hoping it will be good, if I get to go.
will be interested to see what you think of it.. though beware of the queues!
hi myriam, hope you get to try it. fingers crossed the weather remains dry.
hi missklicious, getting the times wrong certainly makes me feel silly but it's all part of the research i guess :-)
hi joey, hope you get to check it out too. it will certainly bring out all the Malaysian lovers in Sydney.
hi thang, thanks for the warning about the queues. no one likes lining up but i guess it's a fact of life with food festivals like this :-)
wowzer. Should've checked this out when I was down in your side of town. Although the queues may be long, the food looks great and diggin the whole laneway vibe. Very Melbourne.
hi Adrian in Food Rehab, very Melbourne indeed :-)
