Lunch with Peking Duck
I have fond memories of the old school BBQ King when it was on Goulburn Street. Not so much for the dated decor and often perfunctory service but for their meaty Peking Duck pancakes. So it's good to see they're the first thing I see on the entree menu at the new location on Liverpool Street — and the fit out and decor is much cleaner and modern now. Peking Duck ($14, 2 pieces) still comes with a meaty chunk of duck meat. Never fear when it's served not made up as a waiter will combine all the ingredients together at the table complete with hoisin sauce and that signature stem of shallot wrapped with a fresh chilli.
Short Soup ($8) is a smallish bowl but still packed to the brim with nice wontons in a hot and tasty broth that's thankfully not watery and tasteless. Add some of that tasty side of soy sauce with chilli sauce and fresh chillies for extra flavour and chilli kick to make it complete. Service was abundant and keenly efficient but don't expect sincere pleasantries. You're there to sit, eat and pay your bill. The Crispy Shredded Beef with Tangy Sauce, Roast Pork (Crispy Pork) and Pippies with XO Sauce are calling my name for a future visit.
