Cantonese is the new Rockpool

Always good to see Chef Neil Perry at the kitchen pass on its first day of opening. Loving the decor and friendly professional service as you'd expect from such a fine looking restaurant. Freshly shucked oysters with ginger and black bean dressing ($4.50) from Merimbula had a nice flavour combo and made for a great starter. Prawn har goa ($12, 4 pieces) seemed to be made well but would have preferred more noticeable texture of the prawn. Scallop and prawn siu mai ($12, 4 pieces) had the scallop chopped up inside although I tend to prefer when they sit a whole one on top. Fried chicken wings with sweet sour sauce ($9.50, 2 pieces half serve) was the stand out for me. That crispy egg batter on the chicken so good and meat nice and juicy. Great chilli sauce served on the side without having to ask for it gets a tick of approval.

Leaving a bit of room for dessert I had to try the Fried vanilla and date ice cream with maple sauce ($14). Pleasant crunch on the coating and pleasing yummy flavours. For those that enjoy their cocktails on the boozy side I'd recommend the Jade Emperor - Vodka, Chartreuse, Amaretto, Dry Vermouth ($20) with well balanced flavours or the Luck Dragon - 1988 Armagnac, Leather Aged Curacao, Apricot Brandy, Lemon, Lime, Dark Cocoa ($22). Apparently the yum cha will be available from 31 July. For a romantic date night be sure to request Table 88 on the balcony, previously named Table 50 and perhaps order that $280 per kg live lobster as a special treat. There's a large screen that hides the kitchen now but I'd rather see glimpses of the chef and kitchen theatre which adds more character to the dining experience.

Authentic thai takeaway

I always thought Chat Thai would be more expensive than your usual Thai takeaways but I'm finding some of the classic dishes are very reasonably priced or even cheaper for a more authentic product. First time trying the Bangkok wings - lightly battered and fried chicken wings ($9.90) and loving them that have now become a new Simon Favourite. I'd definitely get these again to share as a starter and I like how they pack them in a cardboard box for takeaway. I'm liking the Pad Thai with prawns ($15.90) with decent sized prawns. The basic Pad Thai is only $10.90 but prawns adds an extra $5 to the dish. Panaeng curry of beef with kaffir lime leaves and basil ($11.90) is full of flavour and goes well with some steamed jasmine rice ($2.50 small). The beef becomes a little tough towards the end of the meal but the flavours of the curry keep giving some tasty satisfaction. You can't order online for a pickup so you have to call instead unless you want it delivered. Service is efficient and polite. It's a popular spot for locals to dine as well. Keep a takeaway menu handy at home as I find their website on a mobile very non-user friendly.

When you want to eat now

Thanks to Akiva Szental from Eatnow for inviting me to try out their takeaway ordering system with a $70 voucher code. I could have ordered via my iPhone but I prefer ordering via a computer because I find it easier to see more of the menu at once. I chose Why Thai Restaurant because I noticed they were new to Eatnow and were offering a 25% discount for first time orders which was great — more food for your dollar. Total came to $70.27 with the first time discount minus $70 which left $0.27 to pay. Eatnow was easy to use and navigate and I received an sms confirmation of 45 minutes for ETA delivery. Ended up being about 30 minutes which was good timing. The delivery service was friendly although the restaurant had supplied the incorrect spring rolls and missed the golden wings so a quick phone call was met with an apology and quick 15 minutes second delivery with friendly and apologetic service which gets a customer service tick from me. I enjoyed the food although serving size seemed smaller than other local Thai restaurants I've had takeaway from. Thai Fish Cakes ($7.50, 4 pieces), Stir Fried Cashew Nuts Prawns ($16.80) and Golden Wings ($7, 5 pieces) were my favourites of the order. I'd happily use Eatnow again.

Spring Rolls delivered but wrong order as they should have been Web Spring Rolls ($6.50, 5 pieces). Phoned restaurant and they apologised and sent out correct order within 15 minutes. Good service response.
