Negroni time (12 Sept 2018)

Boozy Negroni O Clock

Love my negronis. First time we've bought Rosso Antico Aperitivo and now making negronis at home tastes so much better. I used to use a white vermouth I had but it just didn't taste the same as I had in restaurants and bars. I noticed Rosso Antico on a lot of cocktail menus so thought it was time to get some and only costs about $20. Happy place achieved. The 78 Degree gin was from the Mrs for Father's Day. Lovely gin. I do love my gins as either a gin and tonic, martini or in a negroni. Negroni is so easy to make. Equal 30 ml parts of each spirit with ice. Add a slice of orange/peel if you have some around.

Small bar with a big heart

Eight good years for this true local gem ends this week before they move on to new pastures up the road on Victoria St where Tigerbakers used to be. Owner and Sommelier Amir Halpert is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and it's always a true pleasure when I get to chat with him. As my final week drink choice the 'The Bushfire' ($20) with Botanic Australis bushfire gin by Mt Uncle Distillery, orange peel and bitters caught my eye on a cold Winters night. The description of “A Fair Dinkum smokin' gin Old Fashioned” was most appropriate. Loved this drink with the right smokiness and plenty of botanical love. Thanks so much Amir for your kind shout. I look forward to checking out the new Owl House which will eventually be open for breakfast, lunch and dinners and a bar that I hope will retain the lovely cosy bar intimacy many have appreciated and loved at The Owl House.

My home cocktail bar is now reorganised (9 July 2011)

Cocktail bar on standby

As a big fan of making and drinking cocktails I've managed to collect a vast amount of different spirits and liqueurs over the years. I'm no stranger to the duty-free shopping which scores you the big one litre bottles and being a G&T kind of guy I received the occasional bottles of gin for my birthday. It's got to the point where I simply can't fit anymore in the cupboard so a friends BBQ event tonight and perhaps another friends birthday tomorrow will be a great opportunity for me to share a few to make more space. A bottle of Plymouth Gin, Bombay Sapphire Gin and Tanqeray Gin are kept in the freezer for emergencies when G&T friends pop over. One may quite rightly get the wrong impression of me with all this alcohol at my finger tips but I've never drunk alone at home, and don't intend to, and only drink during social occasions with other people — I promise.

Gin & Tonic with manners

Thanks to Steve Stammers from Weber Shandwick for giving me a heads up on this free public event which only went for 3 days in Paddington. I’m a G&T drinker at heart so I was more than happy to try and pop in and check out this pop up promotional event. The Hendrick’s Refined Courtship Clinic was run by the entertaining Dr Humphrey SixWivs and Mrs Isabella Forlornicate. The art of how to use a fan to express your intentions for the women and the meaning of different styles of hats for the men were explained with much humor and a few laughs around the room. Keeping ‘a cucumbers distance’ when greeting someone was quite funny. Apparently only Hendrick’s is made with infusions of cucumber and rose petals so I guess that’s why it goes so well with a slice of cucumber instead of a slice of fresh lime which I’m used to having with other brands.

Sydney public opening dates were:
Thursday, 23 June (2 pm – 8 pm)
Friday, 24 June (2 pm – 8 pm)
Saturday, 23 June (12 pm – 8 pm)

Other Hendrick's Gin events:
12 Nov 2011 - The Adventurists' Afternoon Tea with Jon Muir
25 June 2011 - Refined Courtship Clinic

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Free G&T sample and high tea snacks, Fun atmosphere, Entertaining lessons in how to court the old fashioned way
CONS: Small space so got quite cosy at times, Only went for 3 days
MUST TRY: Keeping a cucumbers distance to be a gentleman
