The Golden Sheaf Hotel: Bistro, Double Bay (29 May 2010)

429 New South Head Road, Double Bay NSW 2023

Fun live entertainment

I've now been a few times to The Golden Sheaf Hotel and it still amazes me how many people it attracts — it's such a enormous place. It's definitely one of the most happening places in Double Bay and has an excellent live band that pumps out plenty of danceable favourites. Food is reasonably priced for a pub bistro, especially one in Double Bay Double Pay. A nice starter to share is the Mezze plate with dukkah, olives, dips and sour dough bread ($12). Their Angel hair pasta with cured chilli, garlic, lemon and parsley with prawns ($25) seems to always be available on the menu and they make it with nice plump prawns. Steak frites – Grilled 'Grainge' rump 350g, eschalot butter and hand-cut chips ($25) for a protein hit is enjoyed with large rustic cut potato chips although the tiny side salad could do with some extra dressing. The reasonably priced Caesar salad with bacon, croutons, egg and parmesan dressing ($13) is fairly large and can also be ordered with chicken. My Garden style salad ($10) is tightly packed in with fresh ingredients although a little hard to eat out of the bowl without worrying about spillage — a more open bowl would be appreciated.

Other visits to The Golden Sheaf Hotel:
29 May 2010 - Angel hair pasta with prawns, Steak frites, Caesar salad, Mezze plate, Garden salad
17 Oct 2009 - Twice cooked crisped skin half duck, Prawn spaghettini, Smoked lamb salad
17 July 2009 - Prawn spaghettini

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Enormous venue with lots of different areas to explore, Good live band entertainment, Decent bistro food
CONS: Very popular and crowded, Limited table seating
MUST TRY: Most things on the bistro menu, Avoiding pretentiousness

hi sarah, you're lucky to be so close. i hope the mega crowds don't disturb you too much when they're all leaving though. will keep you posted when i'm next visiting. is there anything on the bistro menu you've had which you recommend trying? :-)
