Bananas: So how much are you paying for your potassium these days?, Sydney (20 Apr 2011)

Corner Martin Place & Macquarie Street, Sydney NSW 2000

Going bananas over price

If you’re an avid banana eater like myself then you must be paying a premium price for your bananas at the moment as a result of the Queensland flooding earlier this year and Cyclone Yasi hasn’t helped as well. I noticed that Royal Randwick Fruit Market is selling bananas for around $14.99/kg while the fruit stand at the top of Martin Place today has them for $2.50 each which sounds really expensive but actually works out to be cheaper at about $5-$7/kg depending on the size of banana available.

Interesting fact: Did you know that bananas are naturally slightly radioactive?

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Easy to eat as a snack on the run, Packed with lots of vitamins
CONS: Really expensive at the moment

LOL what is this post?

Surprised you didn't find a way to link it to Urbanspoon.

Haha. Love this post!

I noticed the price of bananas a couple of weeks ago and have stopped buying them in preference of apples and pears. It has been a topic of discussion in my office this week too.

The SMH good living supplement yesterday said Lady Finger bananas were coming into season this week. Hopefully that will lower the price...

I paid about $13/kg on the weekend and they are bloody expensive. Luckily these were small and pretty good as some of the ones the last few weeks have been abysmal.

And Simon, I think you have an anonymous stalker! :-Z

I don't know why they are pricing them so high, cause they are just getting wasted. I see so many bananas that are going off in the supermarket. Wouldn't you rather price them better and sell them all??

I am crazy about bananas, I have one every morning. Even if I have to pay $5 for just good banana in the future, I would still happily pay up.

hi lateraleating, last week they were pretty large but sometimes they are the small variety. all depends on the day/week.

hi anonymous, oh yeah good point. thanks for the reminder. i should have mentioned places with banana in their name like Banana Palm http://simonfoodfavourites.blogspot.com/2010/07/banana-palm-vietnamese-cuisine-coogee.html or Boom Banana http://simonfoodfavourites.blogspot.com/2010/07/boom-banana-chicken-schnitzel-sandwich.html ;-)

hi richard, i remember a few years ago when they were really expensive due to bad weather and everyone was so shocked how expensive they got and how you could get smoothies with bananas in them or they charged extra.

hi joey, i think every blog should have an anonymous stalker — it keeps the page view stats up ;-)

hi susan, i think they won't sell either if they're that expensive. i hate waste.

hi dumpling girl, i think my price limit is about $15/kg. i try and find alternatives but i still crave the bananas.

hi Anhna, it's $2.50 each not per kilo. i wish they were only $2.50/kg which is about normal.
