Vaucluse Ocean Foods: Seafood, Vaucluse (15 July 2012)

669 Old South Head Road, Vaucluse NSW 2030

In search of fish and chips

Intentions to enjoy some fish and chips at Watsons Bay on a beautiful sunny day quickly came off the cards once I spotted the 30+ people lined up outside Doyles on the Wharf Seafood Takeaway. With also very limited available parking in the area it was time to find an alternative. Driving back through Vaucluse and still keen for fish and chips I spotted Vaucluse Ocean Foods which came to the rescue. Service was pretty efficient and friendly and the extensive menu was impressive to see and the counter display looked pretty good too filled with fresh looking produce. The Battered Fish and Chips ($10.40) was a decent size and the hot chips were pretty good. The fish was OK but I've preferred the crispier batter and tastier fish at Seafood at the Beach in Dee Why. The Potato Scallops ($3.90, 4 pieces) were perhaps a bit on the floury side and didn't have that potato taste I was after. Nothing like Bondi's Best potato scallops that I hope to enjoy again. The Grilled Salmon ($11.60) was good though which I'd happily have again. The only fruit juices available in the fridge were Fruit Box Poppers ($2 each). Driving around the area for a nice spot to eat I came across Diamond Bay which is a dog friendly park. The coastal views reminded me of The Gap at Watsons Bay and there's a pleasant track with vantage points to look out.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Interesting menu options, Friendly and efficient service, Fresh looking produce in display counter, Decent hot chips
CONS: Limited juice options in fridge, No seating inside
MUST TRY: Hot chips, Returning to try other menu items
VERDICT: I wasn't a huge fan of the battered fish and potato scallops but their chips were good and I think their grilled fresh fish might be the better option to order
