Thai-spotting at The Spot

Just when you thought The Spot in Randwick couldn't have any more Thai restaurants along comes Blue Monkey Thai. Obviously the locals must love their Thai and the competition doesn't seem to worry them. Upon arriving for some take-away the restaurants was pretty much full and buzzing. The service was friendly and efficient and the decor looked like a nice place to dine. The Steamed dim sim ($6.90, 4 pieces) was quite nice and decently sized. The Chicken wing ($5.90, 4 pieces) had nice flavours with a crisp coating although I'm still a bigger fan of the chicken wings from Taste of Thai. The Chilli and basil sauce stir fry with deep fried tofu ($11.90) was full of fresh ingredients and plenty of tofu. The chilli was really hot so be careful — my mouth was on fire at one stage. I'd definitely be interested to try again and possibly dine in. I got a 20% discount due to their promotional Grand Opening special for take away orders over $20 which made it a bargain.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW:
PROS: Friendly and efficient service, Nice decor, Plenty of menu choice, 20% grand opening discount, Looks popular, Dishes looked good, Reasonable prices
CONS: Limited parking in the area, No seating available to wait for your take away order
MUST TRY: Revisiting to dine in and sample more dishes

Hey Simon - I've recently found your blog and I absolutely adore it! I'm so excited to see that you've reviewed Blue Monkey; after having tried 90% of the restaurants at the spot, I was so excited to have a new place to try. I found that Blue Monkey does not disappoint - their portion sizes, variety of food and standard offer a good alternative to Chao Praya a few doors down (although their $3 takeaway rice with peanut sauce is a bargain hard to resist). Definitely consider dining in - the staff as very accommodating, the service is quite fast, and overall it has a warm and friendly ambience.

I would highly recommend the green curry, the roti, and the duck in paticular! And the prawns :)

Looking forward to having a browse through your previous reviews; and your future ones!
Vanessa

hi vanessa, thanks for the positive feedback about my blog. thanks for the recommendations, will have to try next time. i've also visited Montparnasse in The Spot so review to come soon in case you haven't tried. i wonder if this thai restaurant has the same owners as the one in rose bay with the same name http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/70/1601192/restaurant/Sydney/Eastern-Suburbs/Blue-Monkey-Thai-Rose-Bay

Hi Simon,
Great review. .. Will def visit soon.

The owners of blue monkey thai in randwick are the same owners as the restaurant in rose bay of the same name. Rose bay was their flagship shop which opened a little over a year ago and well worth a visit. Im a regular of rose bay as I live only a few streets away and because the quality and portions are first class and generous.

hi Anonymous, thanks for clarifying it's the same owners. I wonder if they'll be competition for Thai Riffic or even in the league of Chat Thai?
