Artisan Gelato Fix in Enmore

Gelato life is alive and kicking on a balmy night here in Enmore. I left the choices up to the kids. Chocolate Gelato ($6) for Miss 3 year old and Lemon Sorbet ($6) for Miss 6 year old. Happy kids — happy parents. A decent sized scoop for the single serving. No smaller kids sizes available. Service was friendly. Some seating available but can be a challenge to find when busy.

The Sultan's Table: Turkish Dips and Bread, Enmore (30 Oct 2009)

179 Enmore Road, Enmore NSW 2042

The dips are a must

From the outside it looks like pretty standard kebab take-away shop but as you walk through to the back you discover a courtyard full of diners. This is one popular place and with a score of 8.3 on Eatability after 91 reviews it certainly has its fans. I also remember Not Quite Nigella enjoyed the bread and dips so this was on my menu card to try. I must warn you, it's pretty easy to get full on just the freshly cooked turkish bread and delicious dips so unless your really hungry you can easily share a grilled meat plate or pide as a followup main course — I wish I had because it was a huge struggle for even me to eat much else.

I can definitely recommend the dips and bread although I was a little disappointed with the lamb skewers which were a bit on the dry side for me — the chicken was better and juicer though. I found the standard side salad a bit bland ie lettuce with no dressing, too much onion and a tabouli-like salad which was mostly tomato and not much parsley and fairly plain — a decent moist tabouli with some tomato and cucumber salad would have been much better. I much prefer the taste and variety of salad and moistness of meat grills at Impress Cafe in Auburn. There was quite a delay in food arriving after the initial dips being served which I think was due to being so busy. Being at the back in the courtyard also made it difficult to get service attention. I hope to try the Turkish pide when I'm passing by next time.

The Duke of Edinburgh: Drinks in the Courtyard, Enmore (27 Oct 2009)

Monster wine glasses

The Duke as commonly known has a nice garden courtyard at the back if you're wanting to escape the hum of the Enmore Road traffic. A gin & tonic and house white wine will set you back $14 but the glass of wine was enormous so it's pretty good value when you consider this. There's a bistro but I've yet to really try.

A barrel of laughs

If you're not easily offended and open minded then this event could possibly be the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Mitzi Macintosh is hilarious and sharp-witted and the barrel girl Naomi Palmer is a great singer — they'll keep you entertained throughout the night. Whenever the number '54' is drawn it's Studio 54 drink time for Mitzi (pictured above) — I lost count of how many times she had to scull down the rest of her alcopop, but that's the rules! Bingo cards are bought to raise money for ACON and the game rules are available for first timers. At first I was overwhelmed with all the rules and game variations but Mitzi will talk you through the games and after a couple of goes it becomes a lot easier to follow — which then allows your competitive nature to reveal itself.

There are lots of prizes up for grabs including bacon wave racks, bottles of wine, fluffy cushions and even tickets to theatre events if you're lucky enough to pick a special numbered prize. Complimentary bowls of Twisties, Cheeseballs, pretzels, cheese and crackers were provided as snacks during the first half of the night and later in the night ham roulettes and sugary cakes were offered — best to have an early dinner or you'll get quite hungry as it's a late night. The most important rule of the night is to remember to shout out 'BINGAY' not 'BINGO' or you'll be made to wear a very embarrassing head piece. I was happy to see one of my favourite sparklings Henkell Trocken is only $6.50 at the bar which will get you in the mood for a fun night.
