Lee's Malaysian: New shop opens on Hunter Street, Sydney (14 May 2010)

Expanding the empire

By my count this seems to be the third shop of Lee's Malaysian which only opened this week (possibly today) while the other two shops are at Pavilion Food Court and Metcentre (but I think this one is now closed). It has it's own seating while the others are part of larger food courts. I remember the shop used to be a cafe which I never ventured into but now I have a new spot to check out for my Malaysian and Chinese lunch time fix. I wonder if there'll be any impact on Malay-Chinese's very popular stronghold position just up the road for the best laksa in town — which also has the longest lines during peak times. Service looks efficient and friendly and the decor and available seating is all new.

wow that was fast! I walk past everyday on the way to work and they were still working on it yesterday. Hope it provides some good competition, looking forward to your reviews!

aiyo...i walked pass by everyday waiting for them... only today i decided to turn left into pitt st ..hahaha.. (anway still cant eat spicy cuz got reflux... thanks for updating... u r amazing :D

hi yaya, i had a tip off from a work colleague that he spotted it being there. i'll be looking forward to checking it out this week. might even go a couple of times to try a few things. i'd be keen to try their laksa, har mee, chicken rice and char kway teow to compare to their other shops and Malay-Chinese.

hi bean sprout's cafe, i look forward to your reviews if you try them out. hopefully it'll be easier to get a seat compared to Malay-Chinese although i think they're just as popular now.

hi foodwink, good be worth the trip. will keep you posted of what i try hopefully this week. perhaps the Pavilion shop is closer to you? :-)

this is an insult to malaysian food. i had laksa here for the first time today. it was bland, tasteless and who puts carrot strips and broccoli into laksa??? this is seriously bastardised so-malaysian cuisine

hi anonymous, the only time i've seen carrot and broccoli in a laksa is for the vegetarian version but i know what you mean, and this would only be a westernised version in Sydney. where do you recommend for some decent malaysian in Sydney. it's hard to find the authentic dishes if at all perhaps :-)

this is not the flagship store. The original owner of Lee's Malaysian (Lee owns and manages the one in Pavilion Food Court) sold it to these people who still use the logo and name. The restaurant is owned by completely different people. Please do not associate this restaurant with the original, the one and only Lee's Malaysian Take Away.

hi anonymous, thanks for the info. that's very clever marketing by the new owners to keep the name but the original owner should perhaps think about if this is a good idea because it looks like it's the same company. I'll have to visit the Pavilion Food Court again to compare. :-)

I just had a laksa here. Agree with the post above. Completely tasteless, just chilli and oil. It's not very often you go to an Asian restaurant and complain that the food isn't salty enough...

hi andrew, i wouldn't say it's tasteless but there are more robust flavoured laksas around. i guess each to their own. some people would love them and some will find them not to their liking. it's always the case to what one is used to :-)

Has become the McDonald's of Malaysian food. Consistent but not all that tasty or special. To boot, there is much better value elsewhere.
