Phamish: Prawn Cakes, Vietnamese, Darlinghurst (20 Oct 2009)

Shop 109, 50 Burton St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010

Oh no, pancake faves sold out!

When my favourite Duck and Prawn Pancakes are sold out it's a sad affair but luckily they still had the Chicken and Prawn Pancakes on the menu which are slightly cheaper and still very good. I can recommend the Prawn Cakes as well which are tasty deep fried morsels of goodness. The Vietnamese home-style pan-fried rice flour dumplings are interesting although are packed with garlic chives which does tend to linger on the breath. I think I'd prefer them to be balanced with something else inside like mushroom but then it probably wouldn't be traditional. The simple stir-fried Ginger and Shallot Chicken is nice to get your balance of broccoli and wood-ear mushroom.

Duck and Prawn Cravings

I really should stop blogging about these Duck and Prawn Pancakes because this place is getting just too popular (but it always has been). I really like their Soft Shell Crab as well which is crunchy and cut up into bite sized pieces. I feel really sorry for the WOW Thai next door which is always very quiet — even when you sometimes have to wait 30-40 minutes for a table at Phamish. Eatability reviews for WOW Thai seem promising so perhaps I should try them next time if the wait is too long — although when I'm craving the Duck and Prawns Pancakes I really have my heart set on them.

Love Duck and Prawn Pancakes

Every time I now visit Phamish I always order the Duck and Prawn Pancakes — otherwise I would feel like I'm missing out on one of their best signature dishes. I've taken plenty of photos of them so didn't bother taking another one tonight. Dining with friends allowed me to try a few other dishes but photos were a challenge tonight in the dim lighting so I only took photos of two dishes. I tried a beef fillet dish which was tender and the salt and pepper squid again which came with a small bowl of salt, pepper and cumquats for dipping and adding extra taste. I also enjoyed the soft shell crab again.

Tonight I order my favourite duck and prawn pancakes and also try the soft shell crab which I think is one of the better dishes I've sampled here. The batter is crispy and light and conveniently cut into smaller pieces to easily share the dish. The flavours are subtle yet tasty enough and go well with a good squeeze of the wedge of lime and accompanying dipping sauce. I'm thinking perhaps trying the Green Papaya Salad and a Vietnamese Curry with Prawns next time I visit.

The Duck and Prawn Pancakes are still one of the best items on the menu for me at this very popular restaurant. Unfortunately the Salt and Pepper Squid wasn't as good as it used to be at their former address — tonight the batter is not as crispy, the squid is a little rubbery and I find the pieces are a bit too large for ease of eating. The hokkien noodles can be a little tricky with the slippery noodles and could benefit perhaps with a few fresh bean sprouts to break up the sate sauce for the taste buds I think. I have my eye on the Soft Shell Crab dish for next time and perhaps the Green Papaya and Beef Salad.

It's been 26 days since my last visit to Phamish and there's only one thing on my mind — Duck and Prawn Pancakes. Although tonight I somehow confused myself and ordered the Chicken and Prawn Pancakes instead which is just as good and $2 cheaper. This dish would have to be one of my favourite dinner-for-one meals around Sydney — it's light, fresh and tasty. Another one of my favourite dinner-for-one meals is the Nasi Rames from the Java Indonesian Restaurant in Randwick.

This very popular Vietnamese restaurant has found more spacious surrounds since it's original location down the road at the corner of 354 Liverpool Street Darlinghurst. It seems to still fill up by 6.30 pm with it's no booking policy and thankfully still make their popular Duck and Prawn Pancakes which would be one of the first to sell out at their previous venue on the specials menu. You pre-order and pay for your meals which means no waiting for bills when your ready to go. Unfortunately I find their seating not very comfortable but I'm suspecting this is to encourage people not to linger and stay for longer than they need to.
