Single Origin Roasters: Coffee, Surry Hills (12 Nov 2010)

60-64 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010

The origin of a good coffee

Exciting times are just around the corner (or literally next door) for Single Origin Roasters who are about to finish their Sideshow shop to streamline their morning coffee takeaway trade. The Cappuccino ($3.50) is a little on the luke warm side today but has nice depth of flavour and is not bitter. The temperature of the Mocha ($3.50) is much better and has a great balance of chocolate and coffee — possibly the best I've had to date and I'm wondering if they've used dark chocolate which gives it quite a strong chocolate flavour. The Affogato ($5) is worth having for such a reasonable price and comes with a decent amount of ice cream but I still think the one at Cafe Sopra is better which comes with a more distinctive and creamy vanilla bean ice cream.

It's not just the coffee that's good here but their food seems pretty yummy as well. The Roast beef sandwich with chimichurri, beetroot relish, onion jam and rocket ($15) is nicely balanced with flavours and the bread is thankfully not overly thick and quite tasty. My Salad of roast organic chicken, broad beans, gem lettuce and tarragon mayonnaise ($15) has a scattering of tender pieces of chicken and I love the large broad beans and big pieces of crunchy croutons in it. I'm a fan of the crisp gem lettuce but was expecting the mayonnaise to be a bit more flavoursome. It would have been great with a more robust flavoured blue cheese ranch style dressing like I had at Kingsleys recently. The service is down-to-earth and efficient which I actually wasn't expecting and much preferred sitting outside which is a bit quieter than inside where the clank of the coffee machine will surely keep reminding you it's there. Could this be Sydney's equivalent to Melbourne's Brother Baba Budan?

Hi Simon I found myself at the conference centre opposite Single Origin yesterday. I went across during morning tea and ordered the mocha with half a sugar. It was lovely and smooth. My only gripe is that it could have been a bit hotter but that seems the case with most hot drinks these days.
Cheers Rosa (Cecilia's friend)
