I've lived in Sydney for 45 years and this would be the first time I've ever walked into this shop even though I've passed by 1000s of times. Seems like it's been around for decades. Prices are cheap and the menu limited and basic for a quick bite or snack. Balfour's Beta Bake Large Sausage Roll ($3.50) with Tomato Sauce ($0.20) is pretty large. Reminds me of my primary school days when I ate sausage rolls and meat pies for lunch. Interesting and weird to see 'water' is listed as the main ingredient on the back. Not quite sure how that works? There's no seating for the hole in the wall but the courtyard inside the Sydney Hospital is quite nice just around the corner. Proceeds are donated to the Sydney Hospital which is such a nice idea.

If your after a spicy hit in your sandwiches then definitely order them with harissa at Hole In The Wall. Today I order No. 20 with red salmon. The flavours all work well and made for a very yummy sandwich. I tried my friends grilled salmon and egg sandwich which was from the breakfast menu. Fresh ingredients are always a winner and the capers she added gave it a much needed salty kick.

It's a very cold wintery day and my mind ponders on getting a laksa, pho or wonton noodle soup to warm the body but instead I decide continue my quest to try all the menu sandwiches at this little hidden gem on Macquarie Street. Today I can safely order the anchovy sandwich with confidence since I don't have any work meetings scheduled. This sandwich is a powerhouse of flavours and the harissa provides a warming heat in my mouth. It's a very tasty option and the saltiness of the anchovies and olives works well with the creamy avocado and bocconcini. Next stop is a cool and mouth refreshing fruit salad from David Jones Foodhall.

The tempeh burger is packed with so much that I doubt you could add much more to this favourite of mine. The tempeh patty made from soybeans is heated under the grill before adding a full salad including a bit of onion which I recommend. You definitely have to watch out for the drip factor with this one as the humos [hummos] tends to start flowing with the heat from the tempeh patty and toasted bread. Don't forget to grab some napkins and enjoy in the nearby parks.

A yummy sandwich option with the flavoursome Camembert cheese and the distinctive tasting alfalfa sprouts. This makes for my ninth type of sandwich from the menu board. I think the anchovy ones will have to reside to the days where I don't have any afternoon meetings.

I found out today that some of the more popular sandwich menu choices ordered are numbers 6, 18 and 19 but I apparently ordered one of the least ordered sandwiches which is No. 4. Also No. 2 is another one of the least ordered which I've tried. It was so unrequested that my friendly sandwich maker had to check what was actually in it. It was quite nice although a bit more salt on the tomato and more pesto would have made it better for me or perhaps some olives to give it a bit more of a salt kick.

I've been recommended to try the grilled smoked salmon and egg on rye bread toasted which is apparently very popular as a breakfast order.

This is the 7th sandwich type I've tried now. This one doesn't have much colour — looks a little plain and simple — but the creamy avocado works well with the chicken and lettuce. I think having this one toasted rather than plain would work better so it melts the cheese.

The taste of this sandwich was quite nice, although not my favourite, and no matter how carefully I tried to eat it I seemed to keep dropping little bits of sun-dried tomato out of it so be careful.

The tempeh burger has been a long time favourite on mine due to the fact it has so much salad along with tasty humos and salsa. I always feel twice as healthy after eating one of these but watch out for the drip factor. The heated tempeh patty tends to make humus go a little runny combined with the beetroot juice and if your not careful you'll be wearing a few extra stains after your lunch. The freshly squeezed juice was truly freshly squeezed which definitely increased my Vitamin C intake today.

Sometimes the simple things in life are often the best and this seems to apply to the No. 1 sandwich at Hole In The Wall for me. Everytime I've looked at this option on the menu I've always thought it would be boring but with the decent amount of avocado you get and quality ingredients on a toasted Turkish bread it's a comforting winner on my tastebuds.
