Best Café: TimeOut Sydney 2009

I've known of this place for ages above Fratelli Fresh but have never made the time to visit — now that I have I wish I had made more of an effort. I always presumed it was quite expensive which might have been one of the reasons why I didn't bother checking it out but the prices are quite reasonable for the amazing food quality and taste. You can't book and they won't seat you until all your friends have arrived which is a bummer if some people arrive late. After trying the delicious food I can now see why it's so popular and why it was voted Best Café for 2009 by TimeOut Sydney.

I ordered the Osso Buco which was great — meat was tender and the dish was very tasty. It's more of a winter warmer meal but I wanted to see how this Italian eatery cooked this Italian classic so I can compare it to any others I might have in the future. My food loving friends who organised the meet up today said the Affogato was a must have and they were right — a great way to finish off a very yummy lunch. We all enjoyed our dishes and I look forward to trying more of the dishes — I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you order.

Wow the food looks fabulous but $6.50 for what is essentially icecream and a shot of espresso??? Hope it was REALLY good coffee, I have a soft spot for an affogato myself, I wish more places served it!

Hi YaYa, the affogato was made with really good coffee. i couldn't fault it from my perspective and thought $6.50 was reasonable and would think most other restaurants and cafes would charge about the same if not more? :-)

The osso buco looks so great - even though it's a winter food, I would eat that any day!

omg yummmmm Everything you ordered looks soo good. I still can't believe I haven't been there when it's just down the road from me. Must must visit soon

I don't work too far from this place so maybe a consideration if I want something more upmarket for lunch.

I shouldn't have gone here right now when I'm so hungry! I'm so envious of all the food -- I want them all, especially the osso buco!

Look at that fish cake! How crunchy is that?!....YUM!

That's the one thing about Cafe Sopra-the menu changes very regularly so if you have a favourite, it's probably not going to be there the next day. But that's not an issue really as it means more to try and at least it's all very seasonal!

One question: How often do you eat out? OMG!! I am amazed with jealousy of all the beautiful places you have been!

you didnt try the banoffee pie?? ah. must re-visit, it is the best, i always get them to reserve a piece as soon as i sit down.

hi anita, sure was a filling dish but so nice.

hi linda, was the first time for me but if i lived closer i'd visit more often for sure. don't take it for granted living so close.

hi simon, i'm sure it would be well worth it. the panini sandwiches are quite well priced.

hi joy, not sure how long the osso buco will be on the menu so get in there quick

hi k, they get all the produce freshly from downstairs at Fratelli Fresh. it all seems to be seasonal which is a good thing.

hi maria, i noticed beautifully presented arancini balls on another table with the same crumbing. looks delicious.

hi lorraine, it's great it's seasonal. keeps the menu interesting but yes if you love a dish it's a shame it might not be there all the time year round.

hi ellie, i do seem to eat out a lot don't I — if only someone paid for my meals too hehe although i'm so far behind on my blogs now because of it — 21 places still to process and blog.

hi anonymous, the banoffee pie was highly recommend by my friends as well but simply could not fit it in and had to rush off to picnic to eat more. will definitely add to my list for next time, thanks for the recommendation :-)
