Malaysian Food House: Chicken Rice, Sydney (18 August 2009)

Shop 10, 7-13 Hunter Street, Sydney NSW 2000

Decent sized portion

Continuing my search for Sydney's best Chicken Rice I check out the Malaysian Food House which is located at the bottom of the escalators of the Hunter Connection Arcade when you enter via the Pitt Street entrance. The meat is quite tender although there's quite a bit of bone with my leg order compared to other places I've visited. The rice has that distinctive off white colour when there's a noticeable ginger taste throughout. The chilli and ginger sauce is a little watery and the soup is nothing special but does have enough flavour to contribute to the dish. The crispy version isn't actually that crispy as you'd expect but my colleague enjoyed it nevertheless. I found it had a slightly smokey taste. Other menu choices look reasonably priced and possibly worth trying for next time.

After reading another post of yours on this place, I went there today. I was planning to order the Hainan chicken rice. However, they did not appear to be too appealing to me. So ordered Ipoh Hor Fun but it was a disappointment. The portion was small with only 3 pieces of small chicken with 2 small frozen prawn. The broth was mediocre. Definitely not going back again.

hi anonymous, i've never found this place too appealing as well. head to Shiok in haymarket or Sayong under Woolworths for chicken rice worth having :-)

hi Anonymous, i'm not a huge fan of this place. i think it's needs a bit of a renovation. sounds like you won't be going back too soon. try the hor fun at Sayong http://simonfoodfavourites.blogspot.com/2010/01/sayong-curry-laksa-malaysian-cuisine.html which is one of my favourite spots for this dish.

just went there to buy chicken rice for lunch, it was a huge disappointment. the chicken was all breast and was very very dry. the rice was very clingy and unpleasant to eat.
